Driver's License Information for Students

What Students Need to Know about Obtaining and Keeping Their Driver's License

DRIVERS LICENSURE

Schools are required to report to the Department of Safety any student between the ages of fifteen and seventeen (both inclusive) who are not in compliance with Tennessee’s driver’s licensure requirements.

OBTAINING A DRIVER’S LICENSE

Students seeing to obtain a driver’s license permit or a license must obtain an SF-1010 form from the school in which they are enrolled. The SF-1010 form takes into consideration a student’s attendance (See REVOCATION.. below:)

Note: The Attendance Department at the Cannon County School Board will only issue SF-1010 during the summer months when school is not in session.

REVOCATION OF DRIVER’S LICENSES

Under Tennessee Code 49-6-3017, the school system is also required to report to the Department of Safety any student not in compliance due to the following:

Students not meeting the criteria above will be notified by their school with a letter titled: "CANNON COUNTY NOTICE OF INTENT TO NOTIFY THE DEPARTMENT OF SAFETY FOR REVOCATION OF STUDENT’S DRIVER’S LICENSE." Students have seven days to appeal this notice. Anyone requesting an appeal for unexcused absences should contact their school to clarify or seek correction to the reason(s) for the revocation notice. Those requesting an additional administrative review through the Board of Education should follow the steps and dates included in the "notice of intent" letter.

The school system is only authorized to take into account absences when considering appeals. Student or family hardship appeals must be made directly to the Department of Safety.

CERTIFICATE OF REINSTATEMENT

Once a student has received notice from the Department of Safety that their driver’s license has been revoked, he/she may request reinstatement of their driver’s license when he/she proves satisfactory attendance.

A student desiring reinstatement of their license must request a reinstatement certificate from their home school after meeting the above criteria. The certificate may then be presented at the driver’s testing station.

Note: Barring a satisfactory appeal, students must wait until 18 years of age to be reinstated after the second school-related revocation.
